And Thus we See...

That phrase is going to haunt me for at least several more months...Speaking at Stake Conference may be one of the scariest things I've ever done. To make it even more of a crazy experience when I went to print out my talk this morning none of the printers in my house were working! So I was the first speaker and was late. Bless the stake presidency! At first I just trotted along. Bishop Shuel saw me and said: Shouldn't you be in there? Walk a little faster! Then I saw Carrie running out to me saying the meeting had already started. That's when I started sprinting. Brother Facer met me at the door with a look of relief and I walked in at the middle of the opening hymn. My heart was beating faster than a scared rabbit bein' chased by a 'coon! Conveniently they had two people bear their testimonies before I gave my talk. Putting the jitters aside knowing that I was sharing what the Lord wanted me to, I went with it. (Good thing Dallas gave me that book about better public speaking!) Here is what I had prepared:

Maybe I’m just shortsighted or maybe it’s because I’m only 23, but I haven’t really analyzed my life for deep lessons learned. Most of the lessons I’m learning I’m currently in the middle of. So, I’m going to take you guys on a trip with me. I promise it will end well.

I joined the church when I was 16 without really knowing anything about the Mormon religion up to the point of my discussions with the missionaries. I recall feelings extremely inadequate compared to members who had been in the church their whole lives. I knew nothing. I felt sad whenever I was left out because I had never been to primary or I didn’t have all the hymns memorized. All the youth were already friends and I was so intimidated by them. But with the convincing of my bishop, the ward mission leader, and the elders I decided to go to Young Women’s. The fact that I knew nothing became more apparent around these youth but that is when I decided that enough was enough. I began to read the New Era online all the time. I dreamed of being like the people in those stories. The people of Ammon were my heroes. When I was introduced to personal progress I was told it would be ok if I didn’t finish it. By that time I was 17. Even though I was looking into college at the time I thought to myself- I am not missing out on one more thing. I worked so hard to finish personal progress.  I know I’m the person I am today because of it. It gave me everything my testimony needed to be nurtured.  I went to youth conference full of zeal. I reread my journal entries and I wrote down everything that was new to me…which was everything. I went to my first girl’s camp a few months after being baptized. My friends decided I needed to attend the temple in Houston and I received my first limited use recommend in 2004. I remember staying up late doing homework and waking up 3 hours later to go to seminary my senior year.  I attended mutual and eventually people began to think I had been a member my whole life.

How was I able to do all of these things when I knew so little to begin with? Looking back I can see that it was most certainly not a talent or strength I had. There was plenty to be afraid of. I was painfully shy and insecure. My family didn’t like when I did church things and told me about their disapproval often. It was the choice I made that empowered me. I chose to listen to the faith I had developed in my Heavenly Father. I chose to believe that he was really watching over me. I didn’t look back. I only moved forward with faith.

Sometimes life overwhelms me to the point where I lose my ability to act and I become paralyzed with fear. It is easy to give into fear. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like you gave in. It feels more like you were robbed.

Last September I was hit by a car while biking home from school. I had just sped up down a hill so the impact was pretty significant but a couple girls helped walk me home and I was in shock but I thought I was fine.  Time helped me to realize I was not fine. My short and long term memory took a major blow from my concussion that lasted for a long time.  It was physically painful to think and other health problems followed that weren’t so visible.  All these things happened during a critical time in my life when I was supposed to be preparing for graduation and graduate school. Things did not go as I had planned however.  It seemed like all my dreams were slipping through my fingers including graduating from college.  While I felt I was losing my mind many things fell away from my life. I couldn’t remember appointments I had made and I needed so much sleep that I couldn’t make it to class. I began to just give up and think “well, maybe this is how things are just going to be.” It was easy to justify not doing things. Since I didn’t expect anything from myself other people began to not expect anything from me either. I moved home dejected and hopeless.  I felt like a failure and I thought I had nothing left to contribute. But like I said before, I can be very short sighted.

While I was here I was given callings that allowed me to work very hard in the ward. I began to see needs and realize I could do something about them.  I chose not to allow my health problems to bring me down anymore and I rejoiced in the progress I made.  There were many fears that came up: maybe I would relapse. Maybe I wasn’t healing like I thought I was and I would just fall on my face. But what is the benefit of listening to these thoughts? I learned how to choose to have faith. When I put forth the mental effort of casting out these fears my faith flourishes. Fears don’t matter because I trust God. He knows my fears are real but I can reject them and choose faith.

How many times have I allowed things to get out of hand because I thought I had no control over the situation? The beautiful reality is that I can pick myself up and try again. You may think there is nothing you can control in your personal circumstances. This just isn’t true.  There is so much power inside of you. Choose to forgive and choose not to be angry. Choose to have faith that God knows what He is doing and has prepared a way when He asks us to do these things.

I get caught up from time to time thinking can I really do this? God believes in me. That is really all that matters.

And thus we see from my life, that God never gives up on you. You are given infinite chances to get back up and try again. We also see that you have the ability to choose to get back up. Give into self pity but it is not as fulfilling as choosing faith. It isn’t fulfilling because doubts are crippling. Choose to believe in God and his mercy and you will never be a failure. You don’t need to be a victim of your circumstances.

God believes in you and He loves you. Choose to stand up again.
In the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Have you ever given a talk that you feel was overwhelmingly a message for you? The Hill Country Stake is amazing. Peace out my brethren I'm headed to Utah in less than 24 hours!

Off to a new adventure!

Living in Southern Texas for the past 6 months has provided me with some FANtasticly good times. Ok, so the bugs were a huge draw back to that (I'm looking at you flying roaches, crickets, and fire ants)but I'm not going to think about that. Instead I'm just going to think of all the cool stuff I got to do!

So here is my ode to you Texas. I have been trying to get out for so long that I didn't realize what a good time I was having. Just this week my family took a small vacation together (read Miracle was performed). Did you know that the perfect month to go to the beach is October?

Not only was the beach clean and the sun was shining but I spotted the legendary beached whale  HALF WOMAN HALF MANATEE!!I hear they are very sensitive about the size of their fin...approach with caution. Don't learn the hard way!
"These aren't hips they are saddle bags! What have you done to me?!"

Haha, sometimes I think we have more fun than Ariel. We found a man-of-war washed up on the beach and when she wasn't looking we found a stick to poke it with. The little guy deflated into a raisin. So icky! Did I mention I caught some fish?
I couldn't leave Texas without one good tall tale to my name!

That's just the way I was raised!

Another memorable moment from Texas, Steph and I took my mom on vacation to see her parents. My mom hasn't visited her sister in...over 10 years? It was a pretty monumental occasion. It was also pretty impressive that we survived that car trip. For those of you familiar with my family you will understand why. My eye is still twitching.
I forgot how we convinced Ariel to pose for this.
My move back to Texas started off with a bang. I was able to run a half marathon in Beaumont Texas to fight obesity. And by run I mean danced and skipped and jogged and ran. Endurance running is great but you really have to be able to entertain yourself. One of the runners behind me asked how I was able to keep skipping towards mile 12 and I told him it was more fun that way. It was a first time event so they ran out of water on mile 6. A lot of runners took it out on the volunteers and I thought that was sad. My expression however turned into this:
But why is the water gone?
Luckily a police officer came running off a side road with a gallon of water that he shared with those who saw him. I sprinted the only hill in the whole course and it felt so good to use different muscles. My pride told me I couldn't live in Utah for 5 years and not run that small hill. I think that makes up for not making my goal time by 7 minutes. I also ran slightly off course to use a town fountain to cool off. Smelled awful but was totally worth it! I had a running buddy who kept me on pace: Bettie Sue. She was so cute. "I'm an old woman and you're young! I'm not allowed to beat you!" She beat me by a minute. My dad, who ran the 5k, waited by the finish line and ran in with me. People came up to me after the race and thanked me for being so upbeat. It encouraged them to keep going. I still think of this race as a metaphor for life. It's not the running that I love so much as the whole experience itself. Next step marathon next year!

What else have I done in Texas that makes me smile when I think about it? Youth Conference and Girls Camp. So much better when you're a YSA leader going back. I actually promised to fly back for camp next year since I am moving. I absolutely adore those girls! Only one small story from this though since I could write pages on it. While at crafts trying to teach the girls how to make friendship bracelets I had gotten so frustrated. I said "I'm not as good as Sister Craftlady. I suck at this!" The 12 year old girl I was teaching turned and looked at me with her big eyes and freckled face and said something along the lines of "No you don't. You just need to practice more. Everyone has their own talents." Her sincerity and earnestness took me off guard and I had nothing else to say.

Have you ever been to DC? I have now! What a happening place to be. Thanks to my 6 month Texas vacation I had time to go to one of my best friend's weddings! Melissa and Fabrizio ForEVER Yo! I still remember when she came into the lab and told Breanne and I about him. We nick-named him Fabreeze. What a good sport :-) Oh the stories that are under friend secrecy!

My Dad and I visited every museum known to MAN! At least that's how it felt to my feet. Always bring proper walking shoes to DC. I took him to the Washington DC temple (mormon temple) and we enjoyed their visitors center. It was really hard to squeeze in all the sight seeing we wanted to do. Mike went with us to Jazz in the park and cooked dinner with us on Sunday. He even took us on a special insiders DC trip where the SWAT team was involved. Talk about a hook up from a native.

Tourists with a capital T. "Jenny that's a senator go get your picture with him!"

Did you know my brother got married last month? September 17 2010. Right before that he graduated AIT and a few days later he was shipped out to Germany. We celebrated the way my family celebrates anything: with food. Nobody knows when things are going to happen in the military. We didn't find out about this until the day of. Good thing I was in Texas and got to spend a week with him before he left.

Ariel made him hold her puppy and the other soldiers had a field day with it so of course I needed a picture with them both
The after wedding party aka harass the bride and groom with the  camera. Well Nick and Angela are now happily married and have started their life together.

Forget the last year, these last 6 months have been CRAZY! I've become increasingly aware of how much Heavenly Father is watching over my family and myself. I hate slowing down. Sometimes it is needed but I hate admitting that. Texas has given me something going straight into grad school never could have. I've made great friends and had my perspective restored. I leave next week to attempt to start up work in Utah but I am grateful for the time I spent at home. Despite the misunderstandings we have I sure do love my family. We just need to invest in foam bats. That would really help our relationships. Oh yeah.

I end with something that happened tonight. After getting back from Institute I went to the back of the house and Ariel called out to me from bed. I went into her room and she said she wanted a hug and when I went in to hug her she said "Jenny everyone loves you." Good to know everything will be ok.
